Director

Prof. Nasir Isa Fagge

About 85% of Sub-Saharan African population exclusively depends on traditional biomass for cooking and heating. This, being an unclean source, contributes to millions of Deaths and Disability Adjusted Life Years, where women and children are the most affected. Some of the energy needs of the poor constitute threats to environmental sustainability.

To develop capacity for addressing the above challenges, CRER’s strategy includes application of priority education themes for Research and Training in renewable energy generation, utilisation, energy efficiency and governance. Graduates will be empowered with skills and knowledge vital for crucial roles in teaching and research, components design and production for industry in the renewable energy sector. The Impact of CRER will lead to reduced ambient household pollution and its associated Deaths and Disability Adjusted Life Years effects, reduce contribution to global warming and climate change, reduce gender alienation and deforestation, increase agricultural productivity, stimulate industrial development and productive opportunities with overall improvement in standard of living in Nigeria and the WCA region at large.

Mission and Vision

The vision of CREST is “to Lead in Renewable Energy Research and Development in Africa” and it’s mission is “Committed to Addressing Africa’s Energy Challenges Through Innovative Research in Renewable Resources”. The Centre leverages on the abundance of renewable energy resources to conduct research and provide alternatives, thereby improving the share of renewable energy in the national energy mix of Nigeria in particular, as well as the West and Central Africa (WCA) region in general.

Mandate

CREST operates as a research and development (R&D) centre in BUK and its activities are guided by the following mandates:

  • Development of capacity for efficient utilization of energy and conservation of resources for domestic and industrial applications.

  • Development of innovative technologies for resource recycling and clean production.

  • Application of priority education based on multi-disciplinary curricula for Research and Training in renewable energy generation, utilization, energy efficiency and governance.

  • Offer postgraduate research and taught programmes, short courses, workshops, seminars, and conferences.

  • Producing graduates empowered with relevant skills and expertise vital for crucial roles in teaching, research and development, policy formulation and implementation.

  • Continuous collaboration with both local and international industrial, academic and sectoral partners.

  • Publication of research output in high impact journals, generating intellectual property to strengthen leadership and entrepreneurship capacity.

  • Undertaking advocacy for promoting gender equality, social inclusion and sustainability transitions for domestication of renewable energy technologies among households and industries.

  • Provision of consultancy services in renewable energy, environmental management and sustainability transitions.

  • Ensuring quality assurance through certification by relevant local and international agencies. The centre shall achieve these mandates through strategic actions which include among others:

  • Deployment of Dynamic Curricula Development Techniques (DCDT)

  • Increasing the industrial training period, fashioned after the 2U2I model, where students spend 50% of the training time in the class and 50% in the industry.

  • Optimum utilization of digital and online teaching resources, as well as state of the art training halls/laboratories (200 Capacity Conference Hall, 30 Capacity Lecture Hall, 4 x 30 capacity Teaching Laboratories) and an Electronic (e-) Library (see Appendix B).

  • Exchange of innovative pedagogical ideas with academic partners.

  • Utilization of cutting edge research and training facilities (see list in Appendix A) for knowledge production and dissemination.

  • To ensure that each student develops a Fundable Proposal (FP) which will be used to get him/her access to loan facility (e.g., the Micro, Small and Medium Enterprises, MSME loan) through the Bayero University Microfinance Bank (BU-MFB) drawing from the Bank of Industry (BOI) and the central Bank of Nigeria (CBN).
